Computer Systems

A number of questions need to be asked before choosing your computer system:
- How will I cope with sales if the computer fails?
- Will my computer have sufficient ports to connect all the POS hardware?
- Do I have enough space, with adequate ventilation for my PC?
- Will my POS hardware fit into my sales counter?

How will I cope with sales if the computer fails?
Where you are reliant on one POS system for all sales, consideration needs to be given to backup sale processing procedures in the unlikely event of computer breakdown. IBM/Lenovo normally offer a 12 month warranty with guaranteed service by end of next business day (ENBD) following call-out. The standard 12 month warranty can be extended by purchase of an extended 3 year warranty.

Will my computer have sufficient ports to connect all the POS hardware?
The PC to be used must have sufficient ports to attach your POS hardware. As a minimum your PC should have one parallel and two serial ports. If you intend using Eftpos hardware, you will need at least one serial port (two if connecting an Eftpos modem for multiple units). A docket printer would normally be parallel or serial, but USB is normally available at additional cost. The cash drawer would normally connect directly to the docket printer, but if no docket printer is being used, a serial connection would be required. The scanner can be either keyboard wedge, serial or USB. If using a PS2 keyboard, we suggest using a keyboard wedge scanner. If using a USB keyboard, we suggest you use a USB scanner. A serial scanner could be used if there is a spare serial port. Wherever possible, additional hardware connected, such as a laser or label printer, should have USB connectivity.

Do I have enough space, with adequate ventilation for my PC?
Depending on your space available, you should consider a Small Form Factor (SFF) or Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF) PC. These are specially designed for limited space, and normally have all the necessary ports required. They are considerably smaller than the more common Tower PC's. Care should be taken not to block the PC's ventilation - this will result in overheating and can cause system crash and data corruption.

Will my POS hardware fit into my sales counter?
A big mistake often made is leaving the construction of the sales counter to the "professional tradesman" to design and assemble. Make sure you provide him with dimensions of all POS hardware, including the PC, cash drawer and laser printer if applicable. Also take note of the keyboard width if a concealed tray is to be used. Ensure you have sufficient power points, network points, and telephone points - you don't want an expensive sales desk spoiled by unsightly, unconcealed cables!
